The Leadership Growth Elixir: Focus, Practice, Network

In the realm of leadership development, it's easy to get
lost in a sea of theories and abstract concepts. But after years of navigating
this maze, I've found a simple trio of strategies that have been my go-to for
growing as a leader.
1. Focusing on What Really Matters
First and foremost, focusing your learning on what truly impacts your leadership. You know how they say it's quality, not quantity? That's been my mantra. In my early career, I was all over every leadership seminar and book I could find (who am I kidding, I still do it now, but, this is my idea of a fun evening so there’s that). But I learned to zero in on areas that really meshed with my leadership style and challenges. Periodically doing a self-check on my skills and focusing on the areas I needed most really helped me hon in on key professional development areas that would allow me to make significant strides in my leadership abilities.
2. Real-World Practice
Next, practice, and I mean putting yourself out there getting your hands dirty in the real world. Leadership isn't just learned in lecture theatres or books; it's practiced and perfected in the trenches of everyday professional life. It's about what you do day in, day out. I used to be the quiet one, but applying what I learned in real-life scenarios – leading meetings, managing projects, handling conflicts – made all those theories click. It's where the magic happens, turning concepts into tangible skills you can actually use.

3. Building a Supportive Network
Lastly, it's about building a network of great, supportive peers. Leadership can feel lonely, but it doesn't have to be. Surrounding yourself with like-minded pros gives you not just invaluable support, but fresh perspectives (can’t stress this part enough, for the more perspectives you look at the closer you are to a truism) and a sense of community. My network has been my sounding board, my advisors, and sometimes, my reality checks. Whether it's through networking events, LinkedIn, or just casual coffee meetups, these connections have been key in my leadership path.
Like, just yesterday, I ended up in a Zoom meeting with global leaders in their fields. It was a lucky accident, I wasn't even meant to be there, but a couple of minutes in (after first feeling like a duck in a pond of swans) my leadership training kicked in and I went with it. And you know what? It was amazing – three hours of intense debate and learning. I even left with new ideas for my business. That's the power of a good network, it sharpens and invigorates you!
Here are the takeaways:
1. Focus on What Resonates with You: hone in on leadership areas that speak to you.
2. Practical Application: apply what you learn in real-life situations for practical understanding.
3. Cultivate Your Network: connect with others for guidance and fresh perspectives.
Wrapping up, growing in leadership doesn't have to be complex. It's about making smart choices in what you learn, how you apply it, and who you surround yourself with. Remember, 'your networks are your net-worth', and every journey starts with a single step.
May yours be focused, practical, and supported.
